More funding for Vets

Darren Millar has urged the Welsh Government to increase extra funding for veterans who suffer from PTSD. Darren Millar AM for Clwyd West welcomed the £100,000 that has been allocated for veterans who suffer from PTSD, but they should increase the funding to £250.000 as the service for PTSD sufferers does not go far enough as some veterans are waiting 38weeks.

Davey Newell

Sad news of the passing of Dave Newell, his funeral took place at Old Colwyn Baptist Chapel , on Friday 21st  September 2018. Was well attended.

Davey will be remembered for his sterling efforts selling poppies every year, and laying of the Wreath at Old Colwyn Cenotaph every remembrance Sunday.

Tesco ‘Bags Of Help’

Great news! for all of September, you can help us qualify for funding by shopping at Tesco’s in Llandudno Junction. All you need to do is shop there and, this is the important bit, remember to collect your plastic token at checkout and use it to vote in the stand near the mobile phone area, for Veteran’s Shed Conwy. If we have the most tokens at the end of the month we will receive the largest share of the much-needed funds which we can use to buy necessary materials and equipment to enable us to continue our work in the local community helping the elderly and those in need. Every Little Helps!

Old Colwyn’s Lost Men

It has come to light that there are 12 local men from Old Colwyn, who were lost during WW1, and that their names do not appear on the local Cenotaph.

A local veteran & historian, Mr Diege Evans (RWF), when researching the names of the WW1 fallen in 2014 discovered that there were 35 missing from the Towns Cenotaph.

A further 12 local men have since been discovered It has also come to light that many families, at the time, couldn’t afford the sixpence fee to have their loved one’s names placed on the local memorial. Plans are now in motion to rectify this wrong in time for the 100 commemorations in November 2018.

3 Peaks Challenge: Urgent Notification

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, we will now no longer be going ahead with the challenge in June.

For those of you that have donated and also entered the draw for the holiday cottage break, I will be contacting you individually by email to offer you a refund of your donations.

The challenge will take place, just not in June, I have been assured by Scott & Michelle that any entries into the draw so far, will be valid whenever we have the opportunity to complete the challenge.

I apologise on behalf of the Veteran’s Shed and hope that this has not inconvenienced any of our generous backers.

Exciting Times Ahead!

Firstly, I must apologise for not updating for some time. There is a fair amount of upheaval going on at present as we move out of the workshop in Crest, Llandudno Junction and into our new, larger space at Crest, Colwyn Bay.

At this moment in time, this is used as a storage area and will take some effort to turn it into a fully functioning workshop. I will post pics and more info here as we make progress.

Any veteran wishing to join us, even if it’s just to come and have a look at what we get up to, please contact me (Steve) on 07714038698

Michelle and Scott of Pen y Bryn farm and Holiday cottages continue to put up with us as we endeavour to make some sort of headway into getting the farm projects off the ground.

You can read all about the latest goings on in Michelle’s blog HERE.

Looking For ‘Armed Forces Day’ Accommodation?

Recently, the Veteran’s Shed has got itself involved with Pen-Y Bryn farm and holiday cottages near Abergele. Run by Scott and Michelle, and their son, Jay, this is a wonderful, Idyllic location that has great potential to become not only a fantastic community hub but also a must visit location for people holidaying in the area.

Michelle has just started a blog which you can READ HERE, outlining exactly what they envisage for the farm. This is truly an exciting project for us to be involved with as it gives us the opportunity to get stuck in, learning new skills and being socially active within the community. We feel very privileged to be a part of it all. and if you feel you have skills that can be brought to the table, you are more than welcome to come along and help out!

On another note, more relevant to the heading of this post, Pen-Y-Bryn farm is a mere thirty minutes from Llandudno and, with the NATIONAL ARMED FORCES DAY taking place just one hundred days from today on 30th of June, has some excellent farmhouse and cottage accommodation. I imagine that now the word is out, they will get snapped up pretty quickly so why not check out their WEBSITE and go and see what they have to offer?

As always, please feel free to add any comments at the bottom of this post.
